First Aid / Primeiros Socorros

Know how to proceed in Child First Aid is essential for a nanny!

The first thing you indispensably must have is the contact number of the mother, father, neighbor or someone nearby who can assist you; and address of the hospital is also of great value.

I will divide topics in the most common accidents and how to proceed in each.

♣ Hit on the head - If your child experiences symptoms such as fainting, vomiting, dizziness, disorientation or memory loss, take it immediately to an emergency room. In other cases, put ice on the part of trauma to decrease hematoma. If after the accident the child wants to sleep, let her under observation. Awaken the hourly during the first 4 hours after the hit, and make sure it recognizes the place and people. Only then does not interfere more in her sleep.

♣ Choking - Try to stay calm and ask the child to cough. In general, the food or object is naturally expelled. Less than two years should be placed face down on her lap, her head resting on one of your hands. With the other hand, cupped, take five firm slaps on the back (between the shoulder blades) of the child, to help her to spit it swallowed. Alternative: Let children walk in and hug her from behind, placing the middle and index fingers of his hands on her abdomen, just below the ribs. Make five quick movements and pressure relief.

Note: Never use your finger or any other object to force the child to vomit. That makes her even more nervous, agitated and breathless.

♣ Cut with bleeding - Wash with water and mild soap. If bleeding persists, compress the affected area with a clean cloth for a few minutes. Superficial cuts need not dressing to heal. Cut small but deep, should be covered with gauze only during the day. Seek medical attention if the cut is large.
Note: Never use hydrogen peroxide to clean the injured area. Besides eliminating the bacteria, the substance also kills the white blood cells, increasing the risk of infection, and also dissolves the blood clot, which retards healing.

♣ Swallowed objects - If a child swallows a small object and not complain of pain or salivate excessively, eliminating wait feces. Otherwise, take her to the emergency room. A radiograph can determine what should be done. Objects placed in the nose or ears shall be removed only if they are fully accessible, with the tip out, and if the child can collaborate. Be careful not to aggravate the situation. The ideal is to go to the emergency room.
Note: Never use the tweezers or cotton swabs to remove the object from the ear or nose - this attempt can push it further.

♣ Intoxication - In the case of ingestion of toxic substances or drugs, it is best to contact the Center for Toxicology your city to receive guidance on how to act. If children ingest solvents, kerosene, acids or caustic, take it immediately to an emergency room.
Note: Never force vomiting, especially if the substance is derived from lye, which burns the bodies during the intake and also when expelled. The induced vomiting should be just in case a few products, and always within 1 hour after ingestion. After this period, the majority of substances already been absorbed by the body. http://www.poisons.ie/ Public Poisons Information Line: 018092166 or 999 or 112

♣ Burn - Water is the best remedy for any type of burn. In severe cases, when it reaches the entire body and even the clothes, take your child to the cold shower. To transport her to the hospital, wrap the burned area with soft cloths and very wet to keep skin hydrated and relieve pain.
Note - Never pass any ointment or cream in place of the burn without medical advice.

♣ Convulsion - Move the child objects that could hurt her. Put her lying on her side, with her head resting on a pillow or cushion and hold the jaw to keep his mouth open. This eases breathing and helps in case of vomiting. Expect to spend seizure.
Note - Never put a spoon or hand to hold the child's tongue. There is no danger of swallowing or choking her with his tongue durate a seizure.

Espere a convulsão passar.

How to change Diapers (Como trocar fraldas)

My first post is about something very simple, but it can be a nightmare to someone who never did it before:
Change diapers!
This is an explanation video about it (I prefer videos with toys because doesn't show private parts of children).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv86z9Jkj0o

Before you begin, wash your hands and see if you have at your disposal everything you need:
• A safe place to make the change with a changing waterproof table, easy to clean
• A clean diaper
• A bag or trash can to throw the dirty diaper
• Cotton and warm water or baby wipes
• Pomade against diaper rash
• A clean clothe on hand for the case of the diaper leaked, or place any "accident" in the middle of the exchange
• A toy to attract baby's attention

About the products to clean and to use after clean the baby, you have to ask to the mother because the better way to do it is as similar as possible of her.

When should you change the baby? The general rule is to make the switch at each feeding, before or after it, depending on what works best for you, and whenever the baby has pooed.
PS.: if the baby regurgitates enough, or have gastroesophageal reflux, try not to change the diaper immediately after feeding, because the whole movement can increase regurgitation.
Checking if is time to change Try putting your finger (clean) inside the diaper about every two hours to see if it is not too wet. Or feel the diaper seems "heavy".
Important: When you are taking care of a baby make sure that your nails are short and clean.
In girls, always wipe from front to back, not to let the bacteria from feces entering the vagina.

Tip of Auntie Ko: If your child is a boy, use a folded cloth diaper as a "shield" against any pee baths in the range where his penis to be uncovered.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv86z9Jkj0o
